  • El Niño is intensifying, with a very strong event expected during October–December (OND) rainy season, potentially amplified by a positive Indian Ocean Dipole.
  • Eastern Africa faces drought and flooding: Current dry conditions are affecting several countries, while severe flooding risks are expected to increase from October.
  • Vulnerabilities are already extremely high: 48.5 million people need humanitarian assistance, more than 40 million face acute food insecurity and 8.3 million children are acutely malnourished.
  • Impacts will extend beyond food security, increasing disease outbreaks, displacement, protection risks and pressure on already stretched health, and water, sanitation and hygiene systems.
  • Urgent anticipatory action and flexible financing are critical to pre-position assistance, protect vulnerable communities and reduce humanitarian impacts and response costs before the OND season.
