On 15 August, AMDA concluded its medical relief activities for the earthquake victims in Caraballeda, one of the hardest-hit locations in La Guaira, Venezuela. The city was heavily devastated by two massive quakes (mag. 7.2 and 7.5) that struck the nation on 24 June.
Nearly two months have passed since the disaster, signs of daily life are gradually returning. Around the temporary clinic where AMDA continued its relief work, people are enjoying their meals once again at local restaurants as they have started reopening. Likewise, local fishermen have resumed their work, all of which reassured the ground team of the steady progress in post-disaster recovery.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, people could be seen standing near collapsed buildings, waiting for relatives and acquaintances to be rescued.
Such scenes have now disappeared. Instead, heavy machinery is stationed at demolition sites, ready to remove the rubble from dismantled buildings. Efforts are also being made to speed up the recovery process, including temporarily closing sections of major roads to allow trucks carrying debris to pass more easily. At the same time, construction work continues to leave the surrounding area dusty.
Going forward, AMDA’s local partners are expected to take the lead in continuing the medical support at the temporary clinic.
As plans are now underway to support the post-disaster recovery phase, AMDA will continue to work closely with local communities and respond to the needs on the ground.
