Country: occupied Palestinian territory Source: Medical Aid for Palestinians Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is urgently scaling up its emergency medical response across the occupied West Bank as a sharp rise in settler violence drives a surge in trauma cases and civilian casualties. The first three months of 2026 have already seen almost as many Palestinians killed in settler attacks than during the whole of 2025. Since the beginning of 2026, settlers in the West Bank have killed at least seven Palestinians in the West Bank, almost as many as were killed in the whole of 2025. Palestinian communities have reported a huge increase in settler violence, with homes and vehicles set on fire, widespread intimidation, shootings and assaults. This is often emboldened by the Israeli military and serves to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homes. More than 1,500 Palestinians have been displaced since the start of this year due to demolitions and settler attacks. In response to the increase in violence, MAP has escalated its emergency response by providing emergency care training to community workers and deploying medical supplies to hospitals and urgent care centres to ensure healthcare workers can respond immediately during spikes in violence. Following an arson attack by settlers on a village health clinic and vehicle in Burqa, east of Ramallah, MAP urgently deployed critical medical supplies to the nearby Palestine Medical Complex. Aisha Mansour, MAP’s West Bank Director, said, “Our teams and partners are facing a terrifying surge in casualties and injuries that the already heavy burdened health system must respond to. The scale and intensity of settler attacks in recent weeks is deeply alarming and is putting immense pressure on frontline healthcare services. Healthcare workers and civilians must be protected, and there must be accountability for the aggression and attacks we’re witnessing.” The settler violence has escalated since the start of the US and Israel’s war with Iran, with settler attacks resulting in casualties or property damage in about 90 communities and injuring more than 100 Palestinians – more than seven attacks per day. Movement restrictions and checkpoints imposed by Israeli authorities have further limited access to timely medical care, placing even greater pressure on overstretched Palestinian healthcare services. MAP urges the UK government to intensify its efforts to end Israel’s ongoing violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory and ensure the protection of civilians. The UK must exercise meaningful diplomatic, legal and economic pressure including the suspension of arms transfers – to ensure accountability, uphold their obligations under international law, and bring a definitive end to Israel’s illegal occupation. Photo : OIM/François-Xavier Ada Genève, le 31 mars 2026 – L’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM) lance un appel de fonds de 277 millions de dollars afin de venir en aide aux populations vulnérables touchées par les déplacements et les conflits au Soudan et dans les pays voisins en 2026, alors que la crise entre dans sa troisième année. « Partout au Soudan et dans la région, les familles sont confrontées à des choix impossibles : rester loin de chez elles sans services de base ou retourner dans des zones dévastées », a déclaré Amy Pope, Directrice générale de l’OIM. « Elles ont perdu leurs maisons, leurs moyens de subsistance et parfois leurs proches, mais continuent d’espérer. Elles ont besoin d’un soutien international urgent et durable, non seulement pour survivre, mais aussi pour reconstruire leur vie dans la dignité et la sécurité. » L’appel vise essentiellement à renforcer et développer les systèmes essentiels de la réponse humanitaire, notamment les systèmes de suivi des données et de la mobilité, les centres humanitaires et les voies d’approvisionnement, les opérations transfrontalières et l’acheminement de l’aide afin de soutenir la reconstruction et la mise en place de solutions. L’une des principales priorités est le renforcement de l’aide transfrontalière par le biais de la plateforme humanitaire inter-agences de Farchana, dans l’est du Tchad, qui permet l’acheminement de l’aide vers les zones difficiles d’accès du Darfour et du Kordofan. Le plan prévoit également de renforcer la collecte de données sur les mouvements de population et les solutions visant à améliorer le ciblage, à anticiper les déplacements, à identifier les obstacles au retour et à orienter la planification opérationnelle. Parallèlement à l’aide d’urgence, l’OIM intensifiera ses programmes de relèvement et de résilience, notamment en rétablissant les services de base, en reconstruisant les moyens de subsistance et en favorisant des solutions durables pour les populations déplacées. Depuis le début du conflit en avril 2023, plus de 12 millions de personnes ont été contrainte de se déplacer à l’intérieur du Soudan au plus fort du conflit, et plus de 9 millions de personnes restent déplacées aujourd’hui. Les besoins humanitaires ne cessent d’augmenter, avec environ 33,7 millions de personnes au Soudan ayant besoin d’aide, soit le chiffre le plus élevé au monde. Les besoins fondamentaux sont les suivants : nourriture, eau potable, soins médicaux et abris. Parallèlement, les risques généralisés en matière de protection et les violations du droit international continuent d’exposer les civils à des dangers. La crise touche également les pays voisins et les communautés d’accueil, car les réfugiés, les migrants et les ressortissants de retour dans leur pays sont confrontés à des risques le long de routes dangereuses, notamment la traite, l’exploitation, la violence sexiste, la séparation familiale et un accès limité aux services. Depuis le début du conflit, le Tchad, le Soudan du Sud, la Libye et l’Égypte ont accueilli un nombre sans précédent de personnes fuyant les violences. À ce jour, plus de 1,3 million de personnes sont arrivées au Soudan du Sud et 1,2 million au Tchad. Les ressortissants de retour dans leur pays représentent une part importante de ces arrivées : plus de 900 000 au Soudan du Sud et 389 000 au Tchad. Ces retours s’accompagnent de besoins importants, car les ressortissants de retour ont peu ou pas de liens familiaux, de biens ou de réseaux sur lesquels s’appuyer, ce qui exerce une pression considérable sur des systèmes locaux déjà fragiles. Une aide immédiate et inclusive visant à répondre aux besoins urgents en matière d’hébergement, d’articles non alimentaires, d’aide financière, d’eau, de secours à la frontière et d’aide au transport vers leur destination finale est essentielle pour éviter une aggravation de la situation humanitaire et une montée des tensions entre les communautés. Au Soudan, alors que les déplacements à grande échelle se poursuivent notamment dans les États du Darfour, du Kordofan et du Nil Bleu, des retours importants ont également été recensés. Plus de 3,8 millions de personnes sont retournées dans des régions telles que les États de Gedaref, de Khartoum et du Nil. De nombreux retours sont motivés par une impression d’amélioration de la sécurité, tandis que d’autres sont dus à des pressions économiques, au regroupement familial, au manque de services dans les zones de déplacement et aux difficultés rencontrées dans les pays d’accueil. Cependant, les ressortissants qui rentrent chez eux arrivent souvent dans des conditions précaires. De nombreuses communautés souffrent des infrastructures endommagées, de l’accès limité aux services de base et aux moyens de subsistance, ainsi que de l’insuffisance des systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau et d’assainissement. La présence de munitions non explosées dans certaines zones fait également peser de graves risques. L’OIM appelle la communauté internationale à renforcer son soutien à l’action humanitaire afin de garantir que les personnes touchées par la crise reçoivent l’aide dont elles ont besoin. KYIV, 2 April 2026 – Over 1.6 million people have returned to front line areas in Ukraine despite the dangers with families saying the financial stress of being away from home and missing their community outweighed the risks, [1] according to Save the Children research. As the war in Ukraine approaches 1,500 days, a survey by Save the Children found increasing numbers of families returning to the front line regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kherson, and Sumy. [2] Three quarters (74%) of 172 parents and caregivers interviewed said that missing their home and community, along with feeling isolated in places they fled to, contributed to their decision to return home to dangerous front line areas where active fighting is ongoing. Almost one in two parents and caregivers (45%) said that they had returned because their children were feeling unhappy, stressed, or lonely in their host communities. About 55% cited the high cost of housing or difficulties in finding work in host communities. Rental costs in safer parts of Ukraine can be extremely high, ranging from 7,000 to 15,000 UAH ($160 to $340) a month – often equivalent to a whole household’s income. Following four years of full-scale war in Ukraine, about 3.4 million people remain displaced inside the country, while 5.9 million have sought safety abroad. [3] [4] Save the Children’s child protection teams found this wave of migration back to frontline areas defied the threats to life from shelling, mines and ground fighting. It also meant difficulties accessing quality education, loss of services such as safe playgrounds for children to play, and psychosocial distress from frequent air alerts and exposure to conflict. Volodymyr*, 47, fled his home in Sumy region, a few kilometres from Ukraine’s frontline, to the Lviv region in March 2022 with his wife and seven-year-old son, Bohdan*. Volodymyr* struggled to find a job and was unable to afford their own apartment so they stayed with friends. Bohdan* has a severe disability and needs regular rehabilitation but the family was unable to find the support needed while displaced. The family also struggled living in one room in their friends’ apartment so decided to return home several months after evacuating. Volodymyr* said: “Returning here, we took a risk, because there is permanent shelling in our city. […] We constantly hear sounds of drones flying over our house. This disturbs our peace, makes us nervous and we sleep badly.” The research identified a mixed and complex picture for families once they returned to their homes on or near the front line. Despite no longer having to pay high rents and being close to old social networks, many parents and caregivers said it was harder to find safe spaces for their children to play. But almost eight in 10 (77%) of 171 children surveyed said it was easier to make friends back in their home communities. Local and regional children’s service providers and local authority representatives who were interviewed said that the toll of returning home caused children to fall ill more frequently shortly after the move. Many children, meanwhile, resort to coping mechanisms such as spending increased time online or on social media. Sonia Khush, Save the Children’s Country Director in Ukraine, said: “It’s difficult to think that families with children are choosing to return to their homes on Ukraine’s frontline despite the very real risk that this poses to their safety – as well as the huge psychological toll of living among constant air raid alerts and the sound of drones. “But the fact that families are taking these heartbreaking decisions and choosing to return to such areas reveals the severe toll of displacement. While they may find relative safety in the places they were forced to flee to, many find that they cannot survive financially, far away from their usual income opportunities and support networks, while at the same time deeply missing the communities and connections they have left behind. Going back to a war zone is never a choice anyone makes lightly. “Sustained international funding is critical to ensure that families displaced in Ukraine have the financial means and services that will allow them to choose to stay where they are. We also need funding to ensure that children affected by the war receive the protection, care and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives wherever they choose to do so, and to prevent a generation from carrying the invisible scars of conflict for life.” Save the Children is calling on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including homes, schools and hospitals, and to end grave violations against children.
