On 10 August 2026, Colombia was struck by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó. Given the scale of the emergency, the National Government declared a national disaster situation and an Economic, Social and Ecological Emergency. Since then, Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Caldas have remained priority departments due to the extent of the impact.
In Colombia, the emergency response is led by the National Government, within the framework of the National Disaster Risk Management System (SNGRD) and under the coordination of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD). At the territorial level, departmental and municipal authorities, and local UNGRD personnel guide the identification of needs and response priorities.
The international humanitarian community complements the National Government- led response by aligning its capacities with the priorities identified by the authorities. At the national level, this coordination takes place through the Humanitarian Country Team (EHP) and, at the departmental level, through Local Coordination Teams (ELCs), in coordination with territorial authorities.
